The Context
The Computer Science department of the University of Twente is expanding. Therefore, we are hiring 6 new faculty members, to strengthen our research in Artificial Intelligence, Cyberphysical systems and Software Engineering in the domains of (1) e-Health and (2) energy and sustainability. These new faculty members will be assigned in different research groups, but inter-group collaboration with other researchers working on these themes is considered essential to reach our overall ambitions. This position focuses on research in cybersecurity, particularly on data, systems, and network security for critical infrastructures.
The Position
The energy transition requires far-reaching automation of transport and production infrastructure, and it also requires a switch from centralized to highly decentralized production with the emergence of sustainable energy generation. These developments, which will further accelerate in the coming decade, will not only test the electricity supply itself, but also the ICT infrastructure that is used to control, manage, and monitor electricity networks. Thus, it is essential that this underlying ICT infrastructure is and remains secure, reliable, and available.
In this area, the Semantics, Cybersecurity and Services (SCS) group of the University of Twente is looking for an Associate Professor to study Operational Technology (OT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), focusing on data, systems, and network security for critical infrastructures. We comprehensively approach this combination of perspectives because they are inextricably linked when we consider the major challenges to face in the areas of privacy (of consumers), confidentiality (of, for example, network capacity), availability (of the operating systems), and security (cyberattacks with an impact on the physical domain).
About the group
Digitalization brings many new opportunities for businesses and governments by fostering the development of innovative online services. However, this development also brings new challenges, notably in terms of intelligence, interoperability, security, and privacy. The mission of the Semantics, Cybersecurity and Services (SCS) group is to advance the development of innovative online services with improved quality through context-alignment and with reduced security and privacy threats.
SCS is part of the Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research (TUCCR), a public-private partnership where experts, professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students from industry and knowledge partners collaborate to deliver talents, innovations, and know-how in the domain of cybersecurity. The mission of TUCCR is to strengthen the security and digital sovereignty of our society by performing top-level research on real-world data, systems, and network security challenges. To achieve significant societal impact, TUCCR combines technical, socio-economic, and ethical know-how and is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, ranging from security labs, testbeds, and data lakes.
TUCCR researchers play a leading role in their field, regularly publishing at top security conferences such as USENIX Security, IEEE S&P (Oakland), and NDSS. In addition, TUCCR researchers are also active in a number of leading national and international research projects, and their work regularly finds its way into policy documents, such as the National Risk Assessment.
