The challenge

Children on the autism spectrum and their others often experience communication challenges. This can have severe impact on educational and societal outcomes later in life. Traditionally, autism is seen as a neurodevelopmental social deficit. A new wave of ethically informed design-research instead addresses the challenge by taking a neurodiversity perspective. In this perspective, autism is seen as one neurodiversity amongst others.

Based on this perspective University of Twente will start a large, transdisciplinary research project, CO-INTEND. We will develop novel, ‘neuro-inclusive’ supportive interaction technologies. We aim to support autistic children, and their others in social interactions, acknowledging a diversity of interaction needs. We will co-design with research institutes, creative industry, elementary schools, experts-by-experience, therapists, and societal organisations.

We are looking for an independent post-doc, with multi-stakeholder project experience, to develop state-of-the-art, transdisciplinary, inclusive design frameworks, and support in daily management of a large multistakeholder research project.

Your responsibilities include

You will be working in the Faculty of Engineering, embedded in the project COINTEND, working closely with research groups in Utrecht (HU), Nijmegen (Radboud and HAN), and Delft (TU). This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to socially relevant transdisciplinary, participatory design research, while shaping the future of inclusive design in the Netherlands and beyond.

Your profile

  • You have a PhD in Industrial Design, Human–Computer Interaction, Design Research, Health Technology Assessment, Science and Technology Studies, or a closely related field
  • You have a strong research track record, demonstrated through publications, design projects, or equivalent outputs.
  • You are an excellent team-player, excited to connect with stakeholders and you know how to stimulate alignment between a diversity of perspectives.
  • You have experience with multi-stakeholder project-management; you manage time and activities efficiently and independently to ensure effective and timely project outcomes.
  • You have experience with practice-based design-research (Co-design, Participatory design, qualitative/ethnographic methods, Research-through-Design, Transdisciplinary research)
  • You have affinity or experience with (neuro-)diversity, design-ethics, and/or embodied interaction design.
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, in English and Dutch. Non-native speakers who can speak basic Dutch and are willing to learn the Dutch language, are also welcome to apply
  • You have the ability to collaborate across academic, industrial, and societal contexts.

Our offer

  • A position for initially 2 or 3 years on a basis of 0.8 FTE (32 hours per week).
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU).
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary ranging from € 4.241,-  to €5.538,-
  • There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme.
  • Free access to sports facilities on campus.
  • A family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid).
  • Excellent career support and courses for your professional and personal development.
