The University of Twente (UT) is seeking a skilled individual for the combined role of Project Manager and Research Engineer at the Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC) and MESA+. This position emphasizes collaboration with industry partners and stakeholders in the Twente area to advance integrated photonics.
Different expertise’s work together in research and development of photonic chips, development of microscopic techniques and application of nano-photonics in sensing, manufacturing, and imaging. To give you a flavor of what we are doing, in this cluster, researchers are for example engaged in research into photonic crystals in which light can be trapped, unbreakable security solutions based on quantum physics, advanced mirrors for the chip industry and extremely precise, miniscule lasers that can be used on chips.
About us:
PITC is a leading R&D institute that encompasses the University of Twente (UT), the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), and PhotonDelta. Our mission is to accelerate the adoption of integrated photonics and tackle significant societal challenges through innovative applications. With facilities in Enschede and Eindhoven , PITC provides an outstanding environment for pioneering research and development.
Key Responsibilities of this function
- Collaboration: Engage closely with companies and various stakeholders in the Twente area to develop innovative photonics solutions and manage collaborative projects.
- Project Management: Lead projects from initiation to completion, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, timely delivery, and effective communication across the team and stakeholders including team management,
- Hands-On Research: Work in a clean room environment, engaging in the development, optimization, and integration of photonic integrated circuits.
- Process Improvement: Develop and enhance fabrication and integration processes, ensuring efficiency and high-quality production of photonic devices.
- Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation and reports on project progress, outcomes, and future directions.
Join us at PITC-UT to embark on an exciting journey in photonic integration. If you are passionate about technology and eager to work on transformative projects with real-world impact, we encourage you to apply!

About the department
The MESA+ Institute at the University of Twente is the leading research institute in nanotechnology. We work on cutting-edge technologies that contribute to solving today's societal problems. Driven by a fascination with the smallest possible scale, our researchers develop materials and components that offer sustainable solutions to many of these issues. Research conducted at nanoscale is the key to applications that contribute to quality of life, and make society more sustainable and safer. These applications lead to reduced use of raw materials and energy. They lead to more human-friendly, less invasive medical technology. They lead to radically new solutions for our digitalised society. We offer top talent the team spirit and the infrastructure they need to thrive and prosper.
About the organisation
The Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) engages some 700 staff members and 2000 students in education and research on the cutting edge of chemical technology, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our fields of application include sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally and is strengthened by the many young researchers working on innovative projects with as doctoral candidates and post-docs. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.
